Thanks Andrew! It’s definitely been a big year for it. It is normal for it to occur on the Mexican Yucatan as well as the US Gulf and south Atlantic coasts. However, it’s really been unpredictable everywhere this year.

Just returned from Mexico, to find loads of the same Sargassum weed beached and rotting! Just the same as it was here in Sierra Leone….here the weed has gone, but I did find small amounts on the coast from Freetown the other week.

Thanks Marcia. There’s been quite a bit of unusual Sargassum this year. Composting it is a common practice in places that regularly receive abundances of it. You might want to try rinsing it in freshwater first to remove excess salt residue, but otherwise I’m fairly certain you can compost like you would any other plant matter.

Thank you for the article. The last week in January, Sargasso arrived on the shores of Mexico. A little place like Mahahual has no machinery to remove it, only wheel barrows. Is there any key to composting it or something? We are currently burying it or in many cases people are just putting it back in the water just to have it rot and get sewer smells up and down the beach. Fortunately, we are on a beach that gets wave action and it washes away but surrounding areas aren’t so fortunate.

I’m a big supporter of these competitions to kill Caribbean lionfish. Even if we hardly scratch the surface of the problem, it gives us the rare chance as conservationists to work with fishermen and sportsdivers as champions of what they do.
